SATC2

This afternoon I slipped out of the house while my child was sleeping, the very capable babysitter rushed over from her internship and I treated myself to a matinee of Sex and the City 2.

Bliss.

One of the story lines that was weaved through the intoxicating fashion and beauty was about seeking reprieve from 'every day life'. At one point Carrie finds herself back at her old apartment for 2 days working on a project and this idea of a '2-day-vacation' gets brought up throughout the movie several times. The idea being that if we can remove ourselves from chaos and get a full night of sleep or a fun night on the town away from the couch and TV, we will come back refreshed with more to offer. I think it is a solid idea.

I realized on my way home to my amazing husband and precious child that I needed a little distance from my home. This movie, this mere 2.5 hours was exactly the change of scenery that I needed.

It is a beautiful movie that has much less Sex than the series did and a lot less City too. But the FASHION, oh the fashion, it was nothing less than expected! Ladies (and gentlemen) treat yourself!

Sunshine!

Phoebe *knows* a few songs; Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Itsy Bitsy Sider, and the ABCs. Of course *knowing* means humming along vaguely as we sing and blurting out the words she remembers. So, in honor of the sunshine, Phoebe and I have started singing You are My Sunshine. Hopefully she will start singing along in the next few days.

dear rain,

If you are going to be here all week, couldn't you have at least brought the 'regal-ness and quaint-ness' of England with you?

We will just have to make due with an afternoon tea, stateside.

garden update

The garden was planted last weekend. We turned the soil again with more compost, made rows, and planted our seedlings along with some more mature plants that we purchased. The seedlings looked so substantial in their safe little indoor environment but they look so tiny out in the wide open space. I am looking forward to seeing if the seeds actually grow up into fruit producing plants. So far we have lost 4 cucumber plants, two pepper plants, two marigolds, and a zucchini plant to some animal. Our current suspect is a starling, which are, apparently, really destructive birds. At this point we have nets hovering over the plants in hopes of keeping what remains.

Met Branch Trail Opening

Last week Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Gabe Klein celebrated the completion of a 1.5-mile section of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT). The newly completed section of the trail runs 1.5 miles from New York Avenue to Franklin Street, NE. It allows users to bypass Florida, New York and Rhode Island Avenues, a combined 18 lanes of busy roadway. District residents can now bike, walk and jog on four miles of continuous trail stretching from Union Station to Catholic University. NoMa residents can access the trail at L, M or N Streets, NE.

The new section includes solar LED lighting, a new park at S Street, and connects to NoMa at New York Avenue. Eventually, the eight-mile trail will connect the National Mall to Silver Spring, Maryland. The entire eight miles is bikable, but much of the trail north of Catholic University is on road, with MBT signs. For additional information on the Metropolitan Branch Trail visit www.metbranchtrail.com. (from NoMa BID Newsletter)

Disappearing Words

At the moment, P is going through words almost as fast as diapers. Pretty much always the new ones are better than the old ones, but it is still sad to hear them go. For a while a favorite word of P's was "o'cake," which of course was supposed to be "OK." We liked it so much we'd try to get her to say it for friends and family like a little party trick. Then, not too long later, she learned "OK," and that was the end of it.

Today I was pushing her in a plastic swing and she turned a bit, pointed at the plastic, and said authoritatively"boo." And just to be sure I got it, she turned to the other side and said it again. We haven't really been working with her on colors, but I think she figured one out on her own. Someday it will hopefully be, "blue." But if we're lucky, it won't be to soon!
